Time-Boxed Investigation
Time-box investigation and report confirmed, refuted and unresolved leads.
These examples and illustrative results are independently authored teaching materials, not measured model results.
Use case
Initial incident triage has five minutes before handoff. Teaching leads are recent deploys, error logs and database connections; only elevated connections are currently observed, with cause unknown. Bound this phase while preserving useful evidence.
Mechanism
Define objective, start/cutoff and permitted checks. Prioritize relevant material; record each lead’s evidence and confirmed/refuted/inconclusive status. Missing evidence does not refute a lead. At expiry deliver inspected/uninspected scope and the best next check without indefinite extension or a fabricated diagnosis.
Bad example
Continue examining all possible causes until resolution despite the five-minute handoff. Omit open leads and claim the database cause is established.
Good example
Budget five minutes for this initial phase with recorded start/cutoff. Inspect deploys, logs and connections; attach evidence plus confirmed/refuted/inconclusive status to each lead. At expiry hand off the partial table, unread inputs and best supported next check. Elevated connections are an observation, not a cause. Budget expiry does not resolve the incident.
Why the change matters
The budget coordinates effort/handoff timing while a status table preserves uncertainty. Together they prevent both endless investigation and invented completion to meet a deadline.
Observable expectation
An illustrative handoff says connection elevation observed, retry/leak causes unresolved, next compare calls and connection release. Inspect evidence for attempted leads and real timing rather than an invented within-five-minutes claim.
Missing handoff, evidence-free refutation or cause inferred from elevation fails.
Limits
Five minutes is a teaching choice; actual objectives/risks may need another budget. Time limits do not establish exhaustive search or change original authority/service-operation rules. The source remains unconfirmed.
